Roller Derby

Bliss Cavendar is a 16 year old girl living in the hick town known as Bodeen, Texas. Ever since Bliss was young her mom, Brooke, took her to pageants to compete. Unfortunatly Bliss never got anything other than a certificate of participation, but Bliss didn't mind. Even by then she knew that the pageant life was not for her. At the start of her high school years she meets best friend Pash Amini, a fellow rebel. Bliss and Pash spend their days working at the 'Oink Joint', a popular tourist site, until one exciting trip to Austin, Texas for back to school shopping changes Bliss' world. Before her mom manages to drag Bliss out of the cool university stores, Bliss grabs a Roller Derby poster, which inspires her to join the Roller Derby, and become an instant star.

Bliss' ordinary world is living in her hick town, Bodeen, and working at the Oink Joint with bestie, Pash Amini. But one trip to Austin Texas, takes Bliss and her mother to cool university stores where Bliss grabs a Roller Derby poster, and right then Bliss decides to go. She and Pash sneak out and go to a Roller Derby game. Bliss then starts taking the senior's bus into Austin for tryouts. At first Bliss is terrible at it, but Malice, the head of the derby team, the Hurl Scouts, sees past her clumsyness and drafts Bliss for a position.

At the roller derby, I think it becomes Bliss' new ordinary home. She feels confident and comfortable there.

Brooke Cavender: I'm supposed to buy you shoes from a... a head shop? Does that really strike you as responsible parenting?
Bliss Cavender:  Fine, the shoes are a gateway drug.

Montag

Guy Montag was content with his life as a fireman. He had a nice house, a nice wife and a content life. Montag had been a fireman for 10 years, and had never questioned the pleasures of midnight runs or the joy of watching pages being consumed by flames. One day, Montag meets a curious young girl, Clarisse, who tells him all about the world in a way that Montag has never thought of before. He soon realizes that the world he lives in is upside down, he no longer loves his wife, Millie, or his job. Montag starts to question the ways of the world, why do people love books? What power lies within them?

The protagonist in my story is Guy Montag, a fireman from the 24th century. The thing about Guy, the quality that makes him him, is that he is secretly inquisitive. This is something that he develops on his own . When Montag goes into a old maid's house to inspect the circumstances of the call, he finds a house of books. The fire cheif decides that they must burn the house. Montag tries to usher the lady with him, but she refuses and decides to say with her burning books. It is at this point that Montag begins to wonder, what are in books?

"There must be something in books, things we can't imagine, to make a woman stay in a burning house; there must be something there. You don't stay for nothing."
- Ray Bradbury, Fahrenheit 451, Part 1

I believe that Guy is heroic in nature because, he goes on a journey to find himself, a part of himself that he must have been missing for a long time. He also is brave and caring, he cares about his home and his family but also feels compasion for the old woman that stays in the house and for Clarisse. He is brave to go against his workplace and his friend and firecheif 'Beatty'.
Guy Montag : [holding a book in his hand] Behind each of these books, there's a man. That's what interests me.

Mostly Happy

Bean doesn't live a normal life. When she was very little, her father left her and her mother, Prissy, she was left with a suitcase full of memories. Memories that Bean collects on her journey through life. Bean and her mother move all over Saskatchewan, all the while, keeping her close friendships with her friends Goose and God. Prissy was in very bad times, she would bring home abusive men almost every night, and would work all day. Then, Jack Vera came into their life. At first Jack seems to be a good man, a wonderful story teller, but he soon is realized to be an evil man. Jack and Prissy marry and welcome a new daughter, Dee, into the family. Bean soon realizes she has more to protect than herself and Prissy.

The character archetype I would like to discuss is for the character; Jack Vera.
Jack Vera is the 'Shadow' and the 'Shapeshifter'.
He is most like the 'Shapeshifter' trait in the beginning because he very charming and devious, but, you don't know if it is all an act or if it is for real. For the first couple of weeks when Jack is with Prissy, everything seems to be alright. The farther you get into the book, the more it becomes apparent that Jack is a monster on the inside. He is temperamental, and jealous. Jack and Prissy start out with just arguments but it soon escalates into violence. The more that Jack hits, the more Bean realizes that she needs to stay and protect the ones she loves.

Charlie

'Some kids look at me strange in the hallways because I don't decorate my locker, and I'm the one who beat up Sean and couldn't stop crying after he did it. I guess I'm pretty emotional.'
Stephen Chbosky
Page 8.

I know its only page 8 but by this time I can understand who Charlie is. One of his main traits is being very emotional. In this part of the book he explains why he is this way, when he was first starting high school a boy named Sean, threatened to beat him up and Charlie told him that he seemed like he wasn't that happy either. Sean then tries to beat up Charlie, but Charlie's brother has taught him how to fight when he was little. So Charlie hurts Sean very badly but can't seem to stop crying afterwards.
I expect that Charlie will learn to be less emotional and he will be able to control his emotions better. Charlie is a strong person inside, he's kind and gentil, and I think he deserves better than the life he is living. I don't think anyone can read this book and understand completely unless you've been in the situations he has been in.

I chose this song/video to represent Charlie because, Charlie is collective, and sometimes he has his down times like everyone, but there is always a better week for him. He doesn't know how to dance either, but this might be something you don't have to dance to.

Connecting

The book I am reading, The Perks of Being a Wallflower, is a collection of letters and feelings of a boy named Charlie. In a letter that was sent from Charlie to his friend, stated that Charlie's sister's friend had made her a mix tape, the boy was always very nice to Charlie's sister and her family, but for some reason Charlie's sister is very mean to the boy. One night when he is over Charlie's sister gets into a fight with this boy and she ends up getting hit by the boy. After she is more compassionate to the boy. The boy makes Charlie's sister a mix tape, which she never listens to, Charlie finds it and listens to it. He mentions the song 'Asleep' by The Smiths.
Also the song 'Autumn Leaves' by Nat King Cole.
They have become some of my new favourite songs.

Book !

'So, this is my life. And I want you to know that I am both happy and sad and I'm still trying to figure out how that could be.'

Perks of Being a Wallflower by Stephen Chbosky
This book is one of my personal favourites, I've read it about 3 times so far and it never gets old for me. It always somehow has a different ending each time I read. And its great for adolensence, since, that's what its about.

The story starts with a mysterious stranger writing an anonymous letter to a friend, well, the whole story is basically him writing letters to his friend. The stranger introduces himself as 'Charlie', and starts to tell the friend about his best friend that has committed suicide. Then, Charlie meets friends, Sam, Patrick, Mary Elizabeth, and Bob and together they begin a journey into drugs, homosexuality, abuse, reading, bullying and sex. In case you are sensitive to strong language, or if you are homophobic, or faint easily, I encourage you to maybe skip on to the next book.
I would recommend this book to anyone. It's a book for everybody.

"Bob started passing around food. "Would you like a brownie?" "Yes. Thank you." -- I ate the brownie, and it tasted a little weird, but it was still a brownie, so I still liked it. But this was not an ordinary brownie. I think you know what kind of brownie it was."

Quoting

So I guess, here I am. In this class. Beside Liam and Curtis. Great.
My quote was :
From the moment I picked up your book until I laid it down, I was convulsed with laughter. Some day I intend reading it.

-Groucho Marx

I liked this quote because I found it humerous and arrogant. Which is two words I would use to describe myself, therefor I found that this quote is like me.

I really like reading, and listening to music. Sometimes at the same time. I really don't like typical girl/vampire books. Tacky. Just tacky.
